NSSA was proud to be a key participant in this year’s Schwan’s USA Cup. As part of our community outreach our club contributed $1,000 to this year’s cancer awareness initiative with NSC. There is a special reason for this. Please read the story below from our U18 boys “pink” team coached by Rich Sonterre, Tom Spehn, Pat Spehn and Anders Pederson.
The Pink Team Story
It has been surprisingly enjoyable to walk around fields this season and to hear teams, both boys and girls, making reference to "the pink team".
Too many friends, family members and acquaintances suffer their own personal battles with cancer or deal with the loss of someone due to cancer. NSSA U18C2 player Kyle is one of those children that lost a parent. Kyle lost his mom, Pat. It was Kyle that first brought forward the idea of wearing pink jerseys, which was looked at quizzically by many of his teammates. It is Kyle’s story that I share with the players, coaches and referees that ask the question, "what’s up with the pink team?" I hope that our story and our unity behind Kyle will cause you to consciously look at cancer head on and ask yourself, what can I do to help.....and then do something.
The USA Cup Connection
To honor Kyle and his teammates’ contribution to cancer awareness they were the final torch bearers that lit the flame during this year’s USA Cup opening ceremonies.
